Each year, Linhart PR participates in PRSA Colorado’s Shadow Day and hosts a student from a local college or university, offering them an interactive, real-world public relations experience. It’s a valuable tradition allowing students to see firsthand what a career in the PR or communications world entails, prior to graduation!
This year, we were pleased to host Kirsten Cavnar, a communications major from Metropolitan State University of Denver. Kirsten spent the day learning about Linhart PR – our clients, the services we offer and what a typical day looks like in the office. She also joined some of our team members at the PRSA Colorado luncheon, where she heard from local PR professionals about responding to and managing a tragedy and networked with potential future colleagues and fellow students.
Here’s what Kirsten had to say about her Shadow Day experience in our downtown Denver office:
I chose to participate in the PRSA Shadow Day because I wanted a better understanding of what public relations is, and to leave with a clearer idea if PR was something I wanted to make a career out of. Linhart PR definitely helped sway me toward wanting to pursue PR.
As soon as I walked into the office, I was immediately greeted with warm and inviting smiles, hellos, and handshakes. I started my day with a really nice breakfast they had prepared in honor of Shadow Day, followed by a tour of the Linhart PR office.
My hosts, Libby Pinkerton and Kelly Nash, put me to work, which I appreciated. They went over what the company does, who their clients are, and areas I was most interested in such as event planning and social media.
My main task on Shadow Day was developing a pitch. It was interesting because I had never written one before, so it was a great learning opportunity and a fun assignment.
I also had the chance to attend the PRSA luncheon and learn about different communication strategies via social media and crisis communications, which were new for me as well.
Overall, Shadow Day was very insightful, and I had a blast. I got to see up close what a PR firm does and what I would want to do in the future. It was useful to see examples of real pitches and then be able to be hands-on and create one myself. Linhart PR is a wonderful firm and I’m so lucky I was able to spend my time there. What I really love about Linhart PR is that they give students like me this opportunity which will hopefully lead into internships and a career. (I would love to be here at Linhart PR!)
For any student interested in PR, I would 100 percent recommend Shadow Day for the experience and to gain a better idea of what career you might be looking for.
